Robert Kennicott (1835-1865?) and Henry Martyn Bannister (1844-1920) were naturalists and explorers of the Alaska Territory in the mid-1860's. Their discoveries, as publicized before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, contributed to the eventual purchase of Alaska by the United States in 1867. Strachen Jones was an assistant to James Lockhart, who was in charge of Fort Yukon from 1860 to 1863 and then Fort Resolution before moving to the Pacific. Jones and Lockhart, recruited by Kennicott, collected ornithological specimens that were later sent to the Smithsonian.
